@Kevin
Wow! You just keep digging yourself deeper and deeper into a hole with every sentence you type. Every avid cyclist I have ever talked to, by the way I live in Los Angeles - not the most "bike-friendly" city in the world, about the subject of riding on the street vs. the sidewalk, they have all said that it is more comfortable, efficient, and especially SAFER to ride in the street with traffic than on the sidewalk for the same exact reasons that Chris had stated. Riding in the street lets you go as fast as you can, making rides much more beneficial for your health and not to mention more fun. You should try knowing what you're talking about before going and giving opinions on things you don't fully understand.

I'm sorry Chris that I have put over 1500 kilometers on my biker per summer without ever having an accident. I also know several people personally who have been hit by cars coming out of laneways(when riding on sidewalks), each receiving various amounts of injuries. When I said, "always watch for wherever a car may come from" I meant, if you see a spot where a vehicle may come out(corner of a building, etc.), then slow down, even if this means slowing down for every stupid freaking laneway of which you cannot see whether a vehicle is coming or not. The statistics are based on people who bike down a sidewalk not caring whether or not a vehicle is coming, because they figure the vehicle will stop for them.(which is most people in cities). I'm guessing that you are saying it is illegal to ride on the sidewalk(not pavement) in the uk), well I don't give a crap, I will ride on sidewalks if it is more safe to do so, no matter how slow I have to go, to make it safe. sometimes it is more safe to ride on the road in low speed limit places, I figure if I can match the posted speed limit(40km/h) AND I am not getting in other vehicles ways, then I am just fine to be on the road assuming once again it is safe.

Chris, do not insult me without reason, if you can state a more experienced, no injury biking past of your own, then please state so, and state your well versed opionion....not some random statistic on which many different conclusions than yours may be drawn., please have a lovely day.

@kevin: you're CLEARLY not an "avid" cyclist. statistically you are more likely to get in an accident on pavements. you are less sited to cars coming out of driveways and side streets. if you were an "avid" cyclist you'd be MORE than aware of this and you'd also have been stopped by the police as in many urban areas in the UK it is illegal to ride on the pavement.

all your comments are completely ignorant of what it is like to ride a bike and you clearly have NO experience and/or NO intelligence and awareness of bicycle safety.

I'm an avid bike rider, on roads and on rough terrain trails, and those people are retards...there is a sidewalk for a reason...use it. Cars are bigger than bikes, and no matter what, if a bike and a car get in a collision, the bike loses. if you are a biker, respect cars and always watch for wherever they may come from. if you have to ride on the grass beside the road to be safe...DO SO!...if a person is rude, you don't give them a slap, you get a mirror in the back of your head at 80km/h...if two cars are coming at each other on a road, as a bicyclist, veer off the road to give them room. If you really wish to be nice to cyclists, then slow down when you pass them and if you can move over, please do so. if you ever see a bunch of retards like this...run them over...
