December Critical Mass update

To the 25 or so riders who turned out tonight for Durham’s first Critical Mass post-daylight savings, you’re beautiful. Frank, Mike, Steve, Alison, Dave W., Dave Z., Emily, Brian, Catherine, Dan, Francis, Brian B., Jason, all the new faces, and all the folks I didn’t get to meet — it was awesome to ride with you all in the cold, in the dark. Thanks to Dale who made sure we were well equipped with blinkie lights, compliments of the Durham Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Commission.

See you next month — January 3rd.

For the rest of you; no pictures. Forgot the camera.

I want to invite you all to a cycling event in Durham on Tuesday 15th Jan.

We’re organising a Durham wide ‘No Car Day’ on January 15th with an aim to get as many people who live and work in Durham out of their cars and trying new forms of transport. We really want to promote cycling and have a number of events on the day which we’d love you to come to. At 12.30 there will be a mass cycle ride through the centre of Durham from the market place with an aim to prove that Durham residents care about sustainable transport and cycling. We’re also holding events in Durham market place where there’ll be free cycle maintenance, giveaways and entertainment. Everyone taking part on the cycle ride gets entered into a prize draw where there’s an old school style ‘Chopper’ cycle and much more up for grabs.

Additionally we’re hoping to get as many people as possible cycling on the cycle path from Newton Hall to County Hall. We’ll be meeting there at 8.15am.

If you’re able to take part in the cycling please let me know (gwyn.williams@silverriver.tv) and i’d be greatful if you could get the word out to as many people as possible. Remember that the main aim of the day is to get people out of their cars so ask people without bicycles to try walking or bussing it too!

(I’m part of a team from Silver River Television following the campaign and event as part of a Channel 4 documentary but also helping with the organisation of the day). - gwyn.williams@silverriver.tv

Oops! As you might have gathered I’ve made a bit of a stupid error and presumed this was Durham in England! Well you’re still invited but I rather think that the CO2 released by a plane flight over here might not help what we’re trying to do! Thanks for your time anyway and best of luck with future Critical Mass events. Gwyn

Hi - I’m contacting you because Duke’s looking to have a critical mass style bike ride on January 31st as part of Focus the Nation (a big environmental event regarding global warming - http://www.focusthenation.org) Let me know if you folks would be interested in being involved. A route’s been planned out and I’m the contact person about it, so drop me a line - thanks.
