I live in an upscale apartment complex that provides chain link cages with bike racks, secured by a code-punch latch lock and a separate cable-style lock.

A few weeks ago I pumped up my tires, strapped the hand pump onto the rack and after taking it for a spin and locking it back up, locked my bike up in the cage, forgetting to take the little $20 pump with me.

Next morning, I go out and find that not only has someone spent time trying to kick in the fence on the door (broke several fence clips, ruined the fencing, but didn't make it through) but that they've cut the cable lock and forced open the punch latch on the gate. I then assess my bike and realize I'd left the pump in there, but something else doesn't seem quite right.

Turns out they had stolen the pump of course, but they also stole my little $5 cheapo LED tailight. In order to get it off my bike, they sat there and bent the folded mount piece of my tailrack back and forth until it broke off. Unfortunately they wrecked the part my saddlebag latches to in the process.

Yes, for a $20 hand pump and a $5 crappy disposable tail light, someone did HUNDREDS of dollars of damage to the locker, and destroyed a $70 rack. They also stole the mounting clip for my headlight, which is useless to them.

People are shit, through and through.
